Turning around Digital Transformations : Turn Around Leadership First

As a turnaround specialist, I often get asked this question… How did you do that… While there can be lots of detailing about scope, schedule, stakeholder management etc, I believe the first thing to do is to turnaround the team leads in the transformation programs.

I have seen that most digital transformation programs have excellent team leads working in them. As the transformation programs go haywire, lot of negativity comes in with blame pushed upon team leads.

What do we do as new leader of the transformation program?

– Understand them first : This would mean spending significant time inside as well as outside the office. Understand their issues, worries, motivation…

– Take them into confidence : Back your team under all conditions. Ensure that they know that you are not here to replace them with your own team. Clearly communicate to top management that this team will deliver. Take ownership of all negative results…

– Incentivise them : Work with the management to get better incentives for team leads. This may mean higher salary, couple of weeks leave…

As these leads get fully focused and motivated, no task will be difficult enough…
